What is Rolfing®
Rolfing is a physically applied technique to improve
structure, posture and movement of the human body.
In the process of Rolfing, mobilising the connective
tissue will have positive effects: over-all relief and well-being can be achieved.
Your body’s natural relationship to gravity will be
restored and your body will be in balance again.
The aim of Rolfing is to maximize individual well-being
of body and mind. Rolfing, therefore, contributes to
modern health care.
The 10 Series
A Rolfer generally works with a
series of 10 sessions, which Dr Rolf
has developed over many years.
Each one of the ten classical
sessions builds upon the results
of the previous one, so that
the results are cumulative and
thematically connected.
The focussed treatment is on everyday issues and activities that
are important for physical wellbeing, for example: breathing, walking, being
“grounded” to earth, stability and
spatial perception. In this way the
client can achieve greater body perception,
and in so doing the sessions
provide the possibility to get
relief from restricting patterns and
promote graceful movement.
The picture to the left shows a young woman before
and after ten sessions, and the
change in her posture. The schematic
figures of her silhouette point
out the structural change as you
can see from the horizontal axes of
the body.
Who can benefit from Rolfing®?
Rolfing could rid the body of
strenuous movement patterns
and replace these by more economic
and gentle ones. Clients
often benefit from these changes
throughout their lives.
One of the aims of Rolfing is to
avoid physical discomforts. The
body is brought into balance again
- back in tune with itself and gravity.
Thus, your body is able to use its
individual possibilities in a better
way. According to Dr. Rolf, for every
being there is an optimum posture,
which can be discovered by
applying the Rolfing technique.
Rolfing is for all ages:
– For people who feel out of
balance and chronically tense
– For people who are exposed to
unilateral strain at work
– For people who wish to improve
their agility and their perception
of the body (e.g. for sports, yoga,
dancing, acting)
Useful Information
One Rolfing session takes about one
hour. At the beginning of each session
the Rolfer will analyze your posture
in standing, walking or sitting.
In this way he/she gets a first impression
of your body structure. During
the actual “session” you lie relaxed
on your back on a padded
table, similar to a massage table. The
Rolfer will then use his hands to apply
sensitive and precise pressure to
specific areas of your body. These
areas are released so that the body
can finally reach an upright position.
This process is supported by
bringing your attention and breathing
into the area where the Rolfer
is working, as well as through guided
movements. The Rolfer will also
work on your body whilst seated or
standing. The quality of the Rolfer’s
touch varies from gentle to deep
and intensive.
Changing old postural habits
often initiates further changes
in life. Rolfing is an holistic
process and it has very individual
implications for each client.
We recommend a series of 10 sessions.
Each session builds on the
progress made in the previous session
and is adapted to your individual
(body) structure. Some Rolfers
keep record of the sessions’ results
using photographs. It is also possible
to take additional single sessions
in order to renew achieved impact,
or to take a series of three to
five further sessions.
